Tras hundirse un barco en el Canal de la Mancha, una niña de apenas un año aparece flotando en un estuche de violonchelo y es rescatada por un erudito y aventurero londinense llamado Charles Maxim.

De esta forma tan extraordinaria comienza la conmovedora historia de Sophie y Charles, quien, una vez constatada la desaparición de la madre de la niña, se convierte en su tutor legal. So when the Welfare Agency writes to her guardian, threatening to send Sophie to an orphanage, she takes matters into her own hands and flees to Paris to look for her mother, starting with the only clue she has– the address of the cello maker.

Evading the French authorities, she meets Matteo and his network of rooftoppers–urchins who live in the hidden spaces above the city.
