Un spectacle plus triste encore, c'etait celui des fortifi cations elevees autour des moindres hameaux et devant 1a porte des plus pauvres chaumieres: un petit mur d'en ceinte eu pierres seches, une tour crenelee grande et epaisse comme un nougat devant chaque porte, ou bien de petites murailles a meurtrieres autour de chaque toit, attestaient qu'aucun habitant de ces riches campagnes ne se croyait en surete. En bien des endroits, ces petites for tifications minees portaient les traces recentes de l'attaque et de la defense.
