Matthew Lewis (1775-1818) was an English author, playwright, and poet. He is best known for his Gothic novel The Monk, which was published in 1796. The novel was an instant success, and was highly praised by literary critics at the time. Lewis is credited with helping to popularize the Gothic genre, as well as influencing later writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. He wrote a number of other works, including the novels The Castle Spectre and The Bravo of Venice, as well as several plays. Lewis also wrote poetry and was a successful playwright, with several of his plays being performed in London’s West End. He died in 1818 at the age of 43.
