No writer has spoken for our time with a more cogent voice than Albert Camus. The award of the 1957 Nobel Prize to him and his work testifies to this fact. Yet, even to French critics he remains something of an enigma - a man capable of hot embroilment with the human experience and yet able to describe it with a kind of dispassionate passion.

Beginning with a brief biographical sketch, she presents and evaluates Camus' work form the earliest writing through the essays, the fiction, and the theatre pieces. Not merely a critical study, the book also describes Camus' idea of the writer's function and his own methods of performing that function.
