A Leaf in Wind and Water: Haunted by the ghosts of shame and an inescapable past, a young girl struggles to embrace the truth of her identity.

Tormented for her mixed-race origins in apartheid South-West Africa, Leaf defends herself in a school bathroom. The aftermath compels her father to reveal secrets of the farm that has been in their family for generations, its history tied to that of a band of San who roamed the surrounding wilderness. But Leaf’s father isn’t the only one concealing the truth. Her mother has locked it away in a room filled with mementos of her broken dreams and wretched past.

When Leaf’s frail sense of safety is stolen away by Pieter Gouws, a brutal man who steps in to manage the farm, she flees south into the heart of District Six in Cape Town. Amidst the forced removals and tortuous ruin of a once vibrant community, the seeds of an enduring love are planted and tested, for Pieter Gouws does not give up the search for her.

From the rugged Kalahari veld, across the sweeping majesty of the Namib’s dunes, down into the breath stealing beauty and anguish of the Cape, Leaf’s journey reveals that the only real keepers of truth are the ghosts who haunt the farm’s small cemetery.
