The Monk

One of the most scandalous and important contributions to Gothic literature, Matthew Lewis' The Monk caused a sensation in London when it was first published in 1796. It is a story about the moral degradation of the Capuchin monk Ambrosio and, since it contains a great deal of murder, sorcery, incest and torture, the author was almost charged for blasphemy. This edition is based on the original version before the author had revised it.
