The Mistake

Having gone to earth, like a sensible fox being chased by hounds, Matilda Mildmay is determined to begin a new life in the isolated village of Wick, hidden away from the relentless fortune hunters who covet her substantial inheritance. With her grandmother, Mrs Florence Ondingsell and troubled young godson, Barnaby Kent, she desires nothing more than anonymity and a little peace and quiet. She hopes to settle into obscurity and avoid any more of the humiliation she suffered as a girl and the unwanted attentions of ruthless matchmaking mamas and their avaricious sons.
However, she had not allowed for her charismatic new neighbours disturbing her hard-won serenity and causing her a good deal of soul-searching. The Notorious Nicholas de Gennis and his friends soon have her doubting herself and behaving in an uncharacteristic manner. Then Barnaby, inadvertently causes mayhem and his reckless actions alter the course of everyone’s lives forever.
Wick’s impassive new rector, Jeremiah Cade, tries to help them, however as truth and lies become tangled and lines are blurred, Matilda finds herself ensnared by own deception and prejudice and can see no way to resolve her problems until Fate interferes and she’s given no choice in the matter.

Matilda eventually learns that not everything is as it seems and that love is not always where you expect it to be.
