In order to keep the main camp running, their Indian cook, Punk, stays behind to look after things. The others split up into two hunting groups; Hank goes with Dr. Cathcart, and Défago takes Simpson down the river in a canoe to see what lies beyond.

Simpson and Défago set up camp, where soon after Défago senses a strange odor on the wind that sends chills up his spine. During the night, Simpson wakes up to the sound of something outside the tent and finds Défago cowering in horror. Défago runs off into the night, so Simpson has to go and look for him. Simpson follows his footprints in the snow for many miles only to discover out that Défago's aren't the only tracks in the snow. The other set of footprints are much larger and don't appear to be human, and it looks like Défago's own tracks have changed over time into smaller versions of the bigger set. Simpson thinks he hears Défago's distant voice calling out from somewhere in the sky above when both sets of tracks fade away.
