Abstract:
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This study was made possible through the assistance and guidance of many people. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to my supervisor, Dr. Tammy Kwan, for her constant encouragement, ceaseless support, persistent praying, endless patient, critical comments and valued inspiration throughout the course of this study. I will always remember her promising phases - "All of you are on a good track." and "Don't get panic that easily."
I must extend my special thanks to my ten S6 geography students for their willingness to participate in this study. Without their cooperation and patience to work with me on the teaching unit about climatic system, the dissertation would not have completed. I wish them all the best as they will attend the advanced level examinations in the coming year.
My thanks also go to my teachers, Dr. P. Y. Foo, Miss Selina Yau and Mrs. Louisa Yim; my students, Rebecca Kho, On Tin Lam, Ngai Man Leung and Mei Fan Ng, and my M.Ed. lecturers, six M.Ed. classmates who gave me comments, courage and support throughout this study.
My greatest thanks go to all my family members and my fiance, Raymond Kwok. I have the endurance and drive to keep going because of their love and unfailing support. I also need to give thanks to the Lord for his guidance. I always repeat these verses in my mind in order to give me faith and strength to finish the dissertation - "Dare to take the journey that begins where the path ends" and "The cross is where you leave your burdens and walk in faith." ii ABSTRACT This was the first study conducted in Hong Kong using an in-depth, qualitative method to work with a group of S6 geography students to describe and explore their experiential perception of learning under the use of different teaching pedagogies in learning a topic in climatic system of the S6-S7 syllabus.
The findings revealed that all students favoured the use of progressive teaching pedagogies in learning geography. They agreed that the use of progressive teaching pedagogies could enable them to participate actively, encourage them to think more in the lessons as well as increase their understanding of the subject matter. Moreover, such teaching pedagogies could arouse their interest and motivation in their learning. Many skills in particular generic skills could be achieved by means of the use of progressive teaching pedagogies such as communication, problem-solving, collaboration and interpersonal skills etc.
In addition, the findings of this study provided advice to teachers, in particular geography teachers, in Hong Kong. They could gain a better understanding of how students perceived and experienced learning under the use of different pedagogies and to provide important information for them to decide on what pedagogies to be used and how to be used in order to enhance students' meaningful learning. iii LIST OF FIGURES AND TABLES
