The Promise, The Land: Jewish-Israeli Artists in Relation to Politics and Society

How are dissidence, resistance and mental destabilization expressed within the means of fine art? What kind of visual vocabulary can be used to supplement or counter mass-media representations? The Promise, The Land, an exhibition and catalogue, present ways in which Jewish-Israeli artists have come to terms with questions of history and identity in the ever-fractious Middle East. Included are works by such artists as Tal Adler; Oreet Ashery, who presents portraits of her alter ego Marcus Fisher, a Hassidic cross-gender Jew; Yael Bartana, whose video “Trembling Time” records cars coming to a stop on a four-lane highway in Tel-Aviv to pay tribute on Soldier's Memorial Day; Daniel Bauer; architect Zvi Efrat, curator of borderlinedisorder, a show-within-the-show originally planned for the 8th Architecture Biennial in Venice; Tirtza Even; Meir Gal, and others.
