Based on personal observations and interviews with survivors, Jewish activists, and intellectuals, surveys the problems of facing and remembering the Holocaust in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, the USSR, and the USA. Focuses on the impact on public opinion and the significance of events such as the Bitburg Affair (May 1985), the speech of Philipp Jenninger (November 1988), the polemics surrounding Kurt Waldheim's Nazi past, and the Klaus Barbie trial. Points out the positive effects, but also the traps, of popularizing the Holocaust in movies and television. Emphasizes the suppression or distortion of the Holocaust in Soviet textbooks and the mass media, and the struggle of Soviet Jews to erect memorials to the victims and to assert the truth about Jewish suffering during the Nazi occupation. Discusses various aspects of teaching the Holocaust in the USA, and reviews the fierce debates on the Holocaust memorial centers in New York, Washington, and Los Angeles.
