The first book of a five-volume edition examining the history of the Nazi massacres at the Babii Yar ravine on the western outskirts of Kiev where ca. 35,000 Jews were murdered in September-early October 1941. Mass killings, including of Jewish victims, continued throughout the two-year period of the German occupation of Kiev. Pp. 21-204 contain six introductory articles dealing with historical sources and the historiography of the Babii Yar murders; the Babii Yar ravine and the suburbs of Syrets and Lukyanivka before World War II, including the topography of these sites; the mass murders at Babii Yar during the German occupation; German photographs taken in Kiev and Babii Yar from 29 September-early October 1941; the concentration camp in Syrets and its prisoners, who exhumed and burned bodies of the Babii Yar victims in 1943; attempts at commemoration of the Babii Yar victims; and the fate of Babii Yar after the war. Shows that the first mass murder of Kiev Jews took place on 27 September, two days before the general massacre - 1,600 people were killed on that day. Reconstructs the route of the victims to the killing sites of Babii Yar on 29 September and notes the exact whereabouts of these sites. Pp. 205-593 contain documents in Russian and Ukrainian, including eyewitness accounts. Includes 72 photographs and many maps.
