Whether you are grieving the sudden loss of a loved one, or are supporting a grieving friend or family member, Walking My Way Through Grief will serve as a valuable companion along this barren, lonely road to healing.
My precious grandson died by suicide on Memorial Day, 2012. He was 20 years old. Words cannot convey the depth of the unrelenting traumatic shock and pain that our family suffered. We constantly asked ourselves questions that could never be answered; "Why? Was it something I did or could have done better that would have stopped our child from the inner turmoil and pain he most certainly had been experiencing that finally drove him to take his own life?" We knew that he was feeling challenged. Despite those challenges, a big grin always played across his handsome face, he had many friends, was socially active, and was an avid athlete. Why? Why? None of this made sense!
Many times we looked for someone to blame. Our partner, the Universe, God, other family members.
Speaking to others, even now 10 years later, we often get responses like, "You're still hurting? It seems enough time has passed for you to heal." At other times, some would callously judge him telling us they thought him selfish, cowardly, or weak, The truth is there is no formula of words that will take the pain away for anyone grieving. All we wanted more than anything was for people just to listen and allow us to tell our story and share our heartache.
What helped me was writing. It was somehow comforting, in the privacy of my inner world, to cry, shake my fists at him, and rail and wail at God, laugh at the fun memories of his young childhood, and to sit in silence, pen in hand, blank page staring back, with nothing coming forth to write about.
Our family found their way through this desert road, though it's not the end of our journey. Though the pain is still there, our ability to cope is so much stronger. As it will be with you. We are on a shared journey. Together we can cross the desert of grief with bleeding footsteps, but knowing at any time we can reach out and, either be supported or support another person who is suffering.
