Excerpt: ... "the Englishman 'Tair' ended his life, and his days and hours terminated by his death, Monday, the end of Saffir, 1240 (of the Hejira), while he, the Sheikh, was absent on a war. The said deceased Englishman, named Tair, on finding his life was hopeless, bequeathed the following articles to the sheikh:–a mule, a red bornouse, a lookingglass, a pair of pistols, a sword, and ten canisters of gunpowder, part of the articles found in his house." These, with a few dollars, were enumerated down to a " nose looking-glass," by the " elders and priests" who entered it after his interment. His credits for loans in Kouka are also stated, and his small debts: among the latter appear the two dollars for watching his grave at night against the hyaenas. The sheikh's letter ends thus, " God knows whether this was the whole of his property, or whether any of it was fraudulently concealed by those who were in his house at his death, Eben Saada, of Tripoli, and the Hadje Ali El-ma-yel, his servants. Mr. Lipyeatt's wife was Anne, widow of Richard Powis, Esq., of the Guards, and eldest daughter and co-heir of "William Gibson, D.D., archdeacon of Essex, canon of Windsor, rector of St. Botolph's, London, fifth son of Gibson, Bishop of London. She was born 18th July, 1745, and married Mr. Lipyeatt, 11th April, 1769. Their only son was Thomas Percy, born 13th April, 1773, Captain 66th Regiment, who died at Port-au-Prince, in St. Domingo, of yellow fever, 5th June, 1796, leaving Arabella n6e Raleigh, his widow, and an only son, born at Gibraltar 20th December, 1795, Charles Jonathan Lipyeatt, Esq., of Dawlish, co....
